…and it’s straight and it’s for people of all colors, religions and non-religions, it’s between two people and it’s really none of anyone’s business but those two people.
Everyone wants to make it their business all the time. I just don’t get it, I don’t get being threatened by someone else’s personal life. I don’t understand being so insecure in your own beliefs that you have to push them on other people. I don’t understand using hate as a guise to “save” someone. If two dudes or ladies getting married threatens your straight marriage, then your marriage is pretty fucking weak.
The news from North Carolina is sad and frustrating, but I truly believe that they will, as all other states who have or make laws like this, be embarrassingly on the wrong side of history. The last time North Carolina added a marriage-related amendment to its constitution, it was an amendment that barred marriage between races. I think in 20 years our kids will be astonished that there were laws against gay people getting married.
And then, on the heels of North Carolina’s bigoted law, President Obama was harassed again to stop his wishy-washy “my views are evolving” stance and finally came out of the gay marriage supporting closet. About fucking time. Of course he was kind of backed into a corner after good old Joe Biden said that he was “absolutely comfortable” with gay marriage. And there’s all this talk about how it might cost him votes (honestly I don’t think those people were voting for him anyways), but regardless if it was the politically smart thing to do, it was the right thing to do. And I wish he would have done it sooner and taken it further to say “Look, it’s civil rights, I’m making a law, jerks.” It would be really refreshing to see a Democratic politician stop trying to please everyone all the time and just state and stick to their guns.
But of course as soon as the historic “Same sex couples should be able to get married.” (but I’m not saying I’m going to do anything about it) statement was uttered, Fox ran this headline (not as a joke):
I guess even they saw how insane that was because it was later changed to: “OBAMA FLIP FLOPS ON GAY MARRIAGE”
Anyways, at the heart of all this frenzy and back and forth are people. I saw this heart breaking video about a man who lost his partner of 6 years (who would have been his husband had they been allowed to get married). It far from creates equal rights, but this video does also serve as a huge reminder why it’s so important to have a living will.
